APA California - Making Great Communities Happen...

Message from the Director | September/October 2020

Hi!

Long time no talk! I have been a little M.I.A. these last couple months, particularly as I have been assisting with the first APA California virtual conference. If I am being honest, I was a bit skeptical of whether the conference would be successful in a virtual setting, as I know I myself enjoy the face time and networking capabilities that the in-person conference offers. However, I am happy to say that I thought the conference was a HUGE success, providing opportunities to network and chat in a ‘hallway’ format through the REMO application, and attend virtual mobile workshop formatted events. The Big Conversations, which the conference was based around, with Big Conversation # 1 on Racism and Bias in the planning profession was the highlight for me.

A few other highlights and takeaways from the conference were:

  • The Big Conversations were the necessary call to actions for us as planners to take the next step towards change, not only in our profession but in our communities; I am excited to see how the Chapter as a whole and each individual section will respond to this call to action.
  • Hopeful that the change incited by those looking to spark movement and transformation of the profession (particularly from the younger generation) will be received well and pursued further by all
  • There was a great diversity or spread of topics highlighted through the conference program
  • Encouraged by the virtual platform and its accessibility (both in financial and geographic terms); especially that a lot of students and emerging planners were able to attend the conference given the lower cost and digital platform
  • The digital platform and ability to record all sessions through REMO or Zoom allows conference registrants to view any missed sessions after the fact, as well as others who were not able to attend

APA California will be posting an assortment of the recorded sessions for free, so I encourage you to look for those and view at your leisure! Additionally, the remaining sessions will be posted for a fee to view.

Feel free to reach out and/or connect with me over LinkedIn or email. I would love to hear any ideas you have for virtual events for the Central Coast Section to keep us connected and our minds intrigued.

All the best,
