Details: A presentation by Brazilian planner Raquel Rolnik and the launching of her new book Urban Warfare, Housing Under the Empire of Finance. Rolnik is a professor of Urban Planning at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. She was National Secretary of Urban Programs of the Brazilian Ministry of Cities (2003-2007). From 2008 to 2014, as the United Nation's Special Rapporteur on adequate housing, she visited several countries, including the US, to study the impact of their housing policies and caused controversy with the findings and recommendations of her final report.

From the Speaker/Author: Urban Warfare is the most comprehensive study of the current housing crisis. It charts how the financial crisis, the financialization of housing, and models of home ownership originating in the US and UK have left millions homeless and in financial desperation across the world. From her experience and through international examples, Rolnik shows how our cities have been sold to construction companies and banks, while supported by government-facilitated schemes, such as "the right to buy" subsidies and micro-financing. Our homes and neighborhoods have become the "last subprime frontiers of capitalism," organized by those who benefit the most.
